Orchestral and Chamber Music

The Concerto for guitar and strings, in A minor, written in the manner of Vivaldi, served as a compositional laboratory in my first investigations of music style as a composer. At the time, I tried to put in a work of mine the harmonic and textural impressions that I perceived in the appreciation of the music of the master of the Italian Baroque, to achieve a sonority which could represent a sound realization of my admiration.

Although it was written in an absolutely tonal language, the experience of composing a work of this size served to understand the bases of tonal writing in the Common Practice. Formally, the concert follows the fast-slow-fast vivaldian model for similar works, and makes, like him, use of a restricted set of small motifs that engender each movement.

The Bassoon Concert started in 2013 and concluded in 2015, was designed as a set of three movements connected in a continuous way, in traditional tonal language, although without the formal structures that characterize the genre. The dialogue between the soloist and the orchestra is freely articulated, with a speech constructed by the interaction between well-defined themes in the three movements (Agreste – Sereno – Brincante).

Parandares was composed for the celebrations of Ariano Suassuna’s 80th birthday. The title is abstract, based on the conjunction of the words “para” and “andares” (for thee, to walk). In my view, it works as something that refers to a desire, a stimulus to lucidity and inner strength, two things that I greatly admired in Ariano Suassuna, a man who traveled throughout Brazil exposing his ideas about culture and art. The tonal treatment given to the piece is based on the free treatment of traditional elements, with the intention of reinterpreting, within Armorial aesthetics, Northeastern music.

Novena das Pedras evokes the mystical atmosphere of the creation of Virgulino Lampião (a striking character in the Brazilian northeastern universe). The work is based on information collected in cordel leaflets and historical facts. The argument for the composition starts from a cordel about Lampião. According to the text, Lampião was born on a farm in Passagem das Pedras, a name that gives the title of the composition, and begins his saga of “cangaceiro” inspired by the strength he had for the blessing of the saints São Correr, São Vigilante, São Ligeiro and São Cuidado (Saints Run, Vigilant, Fast and Care). From this pseudo-religious atmosphere, the idea of a “Novena” is born.

Agua de chocalho (Rattle water) is a traditional locution in Brazil folklore, used to refer to people who talk all the time (“he seems to have taken rattle water …”). The locution serves to name the music because in it the four protagonists “speak” all the time, unlike what usually occurs in conventional chamber music, where passages in silence in one instrument allow to highlight the dialogue of others. The musical discourse articulates serial and tonal structures.

The string quartet O Santeiro de Tinguijada is inspired by the memory of the art of Joaquim Manuel de Oliveira, Xico Santeiro, a great exponent of Rio Grande do Norte culture, who died in 1966. The title of the work refers to the place of the artist’s birth, a town in the municipality of Santo Antônio do Salto da Onça, his homeland. The quartet has two movements. The first is called Inspiration, of moderate tempo, like a cantilena built on two motifs. The second movement (Imaginário) is festive, Armorial, and represents, with the transformation of the main motive of the previous movement, the artist’s joy in transforming his inspiration into a work of art.
