The new Armorial music from Brazil

Danilo Guanais, Brazilian composer

I was born in São Paulo, Brazil, but  soon I came to live in Natal, the “City of the Sun”, in Northeast of Brazil, where I started to study music seriously. At the beginning of my career I decided to try all possible forms of musical expression at my fingertips, without aesthetic restrictions. By feeling how music overflows to other artistic and technical fields, I began to experiment with other forms of expression in poetry, painting, video, education, etc. as a way of trying to better understand the multidimension that characterizes musical making in its integrity and essence.
I think my works reveal some spontaneity and informality, caused by a lack of systematic classes in composition and aesthetics in my early studies, restricted mainly to the lessons of Counterpoint and History of Music given by Brazilian musicologist Jaime Cavalcanti Diniz (1924-1989) at the 1980’s. In the 1990’s, I met Armorial aesthetics, about erudite creations based on elements of folklore, as proposed by his main creator, Ariano Suassuna, and started composing mainly in this aesthetic, in an erudite modal-tonal approaching, to witch I added modern musical writing techniques, such as serialism, minimalism, assimetry and polytonality.

I believe in a kind of Music that looks at universal culture and, at the same time, sings the colors, gestures and flavors of the tradition of my land, to make an art that dialogues with people from anywhere.
